چکیده

Our previous study indicated that unilateral lesion of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) facilitates contralateral VTA stimulation-induced feeding or exploration. The present study was aimed to determine the possible role of the central cholinergic systems in this effect. Immunohistochemistry for choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) was used to measure the number of active cholinergic neurons in their major groups (Ch1-Ch6) and in striatal regions in rats subjected to unilateral electrocoagulation and contralateral VTA electrical stimulation (L/S group) in comparison to the unilaterally stimulated (S), unilaterally lesioned (L) and sham (Sh) groups. The study showed that unilateral VTA lesion increased (as compared to Sh group) the number of ChAT+ neurons in the Ch1-Ch3 and unilateral VTA stimulation increased the number in the Ch1 and the ventral pallidum only. The most sensitive to these changes in the mesolimbic system were cholinergic structures providing hippocampal afferentation. Surprisingly, there was no significant increase in the number of ChAT+ neurons in the L/S group. The obtained results did not confirm any evident influence of the cholinergic systems on the VTA lesion-induced facilitation of the behavioral response evoked by contralateral VTA stimulation.

Lateral hypothalamus chemical stimulation-induced antinociception was attenuated by injection of dopamine D1 and D2 receptor antagonists in the ventral tegmental area

Introduction: Stimulation or inactivation of the lateral hypothalamus (LH) produces antinociception. Studies showed a role for the ventral tegmental area (VTA) in the antinociception induced by LH chemical stimulation through the orexinergic receptors. In this study, we assessed the role of intra-VTA dopamine D1 and D2 receptors in antinociceptive effects of cholinergic agonist, carbachol, m...

The Involvement of Intra-Hippocampal Dopamine Receptors in the Conditioned Place Preference Induced By Orexin Administration into the Rat Ventral Tegmental Area

The activity of dopamine (DA)-containing neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) is a key mechanism in mesolimbic reward processing that has modulatory effects on different diencephalic structures like hippocampus (HIP), and receives inhibitory feedback and excitatory feed forward control. In addition, within the hippocampus, DA receptors are mostly located in the dorsal part (CA1) and dopa...

Intracranial self-stimulation induces Fos expression in GABAergic neurons in the rat mesopontine tegmentum.

The cholinergic neurons which originate in the mesopontine tegmentum and innervate the midbrain ventral tegmental area have been proposed to play a key role in intracranial self-stimulation reward. This mesopontine area also contains GABA neurons. Detailed information is still lacking, however, about the relationship of cholinergic and GABAergic neurons in this region to self-stimulation reward...

Role of the Orexinergic System Within the Ventral Tegmental Area in the Development of Sensitization to Morphine Induced By Lateral Hypothalamus Stimulation

The lateral hypothalamus (LH) has long been known to implicate in the addictive behaviors of drugs of abuse. The ventral tegmental area (VTA) is a major area of the mesolimbic system that is strongly involved in the development of morphine sensitization. The current study aimed to examine the role of intra-VTA orexin receptors in the LH stimulation-induced sensitization to the antinociceptive r...
